Podcast Mistakes FAQs: 3 of the Most Common Podcasting Mistakes
Podcast Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Podcast Name
Choosing your podcast name is one of the most fun parts of starting a podcast. If you choose the wrong name, it can create unnecessary stress. Before you move forward with a podcast name, make sure it incorporates keywords. Your podcast name needs to be searchable. You want the people who are actively searching for your type of content to easily find it. The other mistake to avoid when naming your podcast is choosing a name that’s already taken. Check the trademark database, Google, and the podcast listening apps to ensure your name isn’t already taken. Picking a trademarked name can result in a cease-and-desist letter, legal troubles, and a mandatory rebrand. Choosing a name that isn’t trademarked but is already in use can cause confusion for potential listeners. They may not know which podcast is yours.
Podcast Mistake #2: Keeping Your Podcast Launch a Secret
The first time people hear about your podcast shouldn’t be the day your podcast goes live. You want to create a podcast launch team to help get as many eyes and ears on your podcast as possible at the start. Your podcast launch will be one of the main times you have the most hype and excitement, since it is new. You want to capitalize on that hype and drive as much traffic as possible to your podcast by building a launch team. Your launch team will share about your podcast with their audiences, helping you gain more listeners.
Podcast Mistake #3: Launching with Only 1 Episode Instead of 3
Again, your podcast launch is when you will have the most excitement, so you want to capture potential listeners’ attention from the start. One way to do this is to give them three juicy episodes to binge on your launch date. This allows them to get to know you on a deeper level, and it begins to build trust. It also gives them a nice taste of what to expect from your podcast, and can help turn them into lifelong listeners.
Bonus Podcast Mistake: Not Having 3-6 Months’ Worth of Podcast Content Planned
One reason why 90% of podcasts fail in the first year is that podcast hosts run out of topics. The best way to avoid this is by creating a podcast content bank you can easily pull from. As you are working on your podcast launch, take some time to do a brain dump of potential podcast topics you can discuss in the future. This is something I support my Evergreen Marketing Accelerator clients with. They get access to my podcast content planner that helps them plan podcast topics for each of their offers and speak to their listeners at each stage of the customer journey.
