What You Actually Need When Starting a Work from Home Business as a Mama

Starting an online business is fun and exciting, but it can be overwhelming when you are unsure of what you actually need when getting started. There’s so much information available online that it can be confusing to figure out what is truly a necessity for a new online business owner. Continue reading to learn what you actually need when starting a work from home business.

4 Things You Actually Need When Starting a Work from Home Business as a Mama

1. To Keep Your Business Overhead Low

As a new work from home mom, it can be easy to get shiny object syndrome. You see all of the amazing things other business owners are doing, and you may think you need all the bells and whistles when you get started. The reality is that until you are making a profit in your business, you need to keep your business expenses low. For example, you do not need a website when you first start out. Until you have clarity on who you are serving, have validated your offers, and have clear messaging, you do not need a website. Instead of investing in a website (which is a major investment for a good web designer), use something like Linktree or Milkshake to direct potential clients.

2. Start Building Your Email List from the Beginning

Whether you’re a new or seasoned mompreneur, you never want to rely solely on social media to build your business. Relying on social media can negatively impact your lead generation and income because it is a platform you do not own. You should start building your email list from the beginning. There are many email marketing platforms that have free tiers. My favorite email service provider is Convertkit (this is an affiliate link, meaning I may earn a small commission on your purchase).

When you make it a habit to grow, nurture, and sell to your email list, it will elevate your business growth. You will be familiar with email marketing and how to best leverage your email list as a business owner. Also, you won’t be one of the business owners who panics because Instagram or Facebook are down or glitching.

3. Don’t Rely on One Marketing Platform to Build Your Business

As mentioned above, relying solely on one marketing platform to build your business leaves you vulnerable. You want to leverage at least two marketing platforms to increase your visibility, generate leads, and sign new clients. One of these platforms should be a non social media platform like podcast guesting or networking events. Prioritizing more than one marketing platform to grow your business will help you expand your reach and get in front of more of your ideal clients.

4. Prioritize Lead Generation, Engagement, and Selling

It is so easy to fall into a cycle of supporting clients that we neglect our own business. The thing is that if you don’t prioritize your own marketing, you will find yourself constantly scrambling to find new clients. Even when you are fully booked out or serving clients, you need to make sure you are generating leads, nurturing your current community, and selling your offers. If you find it challenging to prioritize these 3 things in your business weekly, download my FREE Productive CEO Mama Blueprint to help you set your weekly schedule up for business success.

While this isn’t an exhaustive list, these are the top four things you actually need when starting a work from home business. As you grow as a business owner and your income increases, you will invest in your business. Starting an online business as a work from home mom doesn’t have to be overwhelming or cost a fortune.
