Taking a Podcast Break During the Summer FAQs
Why Do Podcasters Take a Break?
Podcasters or business owners with a podcast may take a break to prevent burnout, since podcasting requires your time, energy, and finances. If a podcaster is navigating a challenging season in their personal lives, they may take a break because they don’t have the mental or emotional capacity to focus on their podcast. Other reasons a podcaster or business owner with a podcast may take a break include being in the midst of a rebrand or changing their messaging and offers, it’s the holidays or summer and they have trips planned or want to spend quality time with their family and friends, or other personal commitments interfering with their regular posting schedule.
How Does Taking a Podcast Break Affect Your Show?
If you prioritize SEO when publishing new episodes, taking a podcast break won’t negatively affect your show. SEO helps people looking for your expertise or the topics you speak on find you easily through search. The most that will happen is that you will see a decrease in downloads. This happens because your regular listeners have most likely already listened to your previous episodes, and if they’ve already downloaded an episode, they can’t re-download it. When you return to your regular publishing schedule, you should see your stats return to normal by the second month after you return.
How Can I Take a Podcast Break This Summer?
You have five options for taking a podcast break this summer. First, you can take a complete break, meaning you don’t publish any new episodes during the summer. Second, you can batch record and edit your episodes and schedule them before summer begins. Third, you can switch to publishing bi-weekly episodes. This reduces the time you spend on your podcast. You can also batch these, so you don’t have to do anything with your podcast during the summer. Fourth, you can replay older episodes. This works great if you replay your most popular episodes. Fifth, you can do a podcast takeover, inviting other experts to record a solo episode for your podcast. Make sure the experts you choose are speaking on topics relevant to your audience. Regardless of which option you choose, make sure to give your audience a heads up, letting them know there will be a change to your regular posting schedule for the summer.
How Do You Keep Momentum or Keep from Losing Interest When Taking a Podcast Break?
When you take a podcast break, it can be easy to get used to not putting in the time and energy you put into your podcast. However, I’ve found that for most people, taking a break gives them the breathing room they need to come up with fresh ideas for their podcast. While you’re on your break, remember that this isn’t a permanent break, and keep at the forefront of your mind why you created the podcast. Also, spend some of that extra time coming up with fresh ideas for your podcast. Are there topics you haven’t explored yet? Is there something new and exciting that you can introduce to your podcast audience? Use your podcast break to reignite your passion for your podcast.
