5 Mistakes to Avoid When Submitting a Podcast Guest Application

Guesting on podcasts is a great way to increase your visibility. However, getting a podcast host to say yes to your pitch can be challenging if you don’t know what to say. It’s not enough to tell the podcast host that you have an extensive resume. There are some key components you need to include in your podcast pitch. If you want to start successfully pitching yourself to guest on podcasts, then there are certain mistakes you need to avoid.

Choosing Broad Topics for Your Podcast Pitches

Broad signature topics are not memorable. When you choose broad signature topics, it can result in the conversation going in a million and one directions, which will not create a good listening experience. A podcast host should be able to look at your signature topics and know specifically what it is that you do. This is why, inside of The Social Media Detox Club, you get a day in Voxer with me to map out your signature topics. When you have clear signature topics, it is an easy yes because the podcast host knows exactly what value you will bring their audience.

Pitching to Podcasts with the Wrong Audience

As a podcast host, I receive many pitches, and one mistake most potential guests make is pitching to speak to my audience when it’s not even their target audience. When you are leveraging podcast guesting as a visibility strategy, getting in front of any audience will not take you far. You want to make sure you are getting in front of an audience with your ideal clients. When you join The Social Media Detox Club, you get access to the Visibility and Collaborations Directory. This directory contains visibility and collaboration opportunities. It is updated weekly with new opportunities and it contains a section that specifies who is the ideal collaboration partner.

Not Listening to the Podcast BEFORE Submitting Your Podcast Guest Application

Before you apply to guest on a podcast, you want to become familiar with the show. Listen to a couple of the episodes before submitting your podcast pitch. This will allow you to get to know the host and their overall interview style. It will also help you confirm whether or not it is a show you actually want to guest on.

Making the Pitch All About You

While your expertise and background are important, a podcast host primarily cares about what value you will bring to their audience. Podcast hosts want to know that you truly care about their audience and that you are going to bring value. So, instead of outlining why you would make such a wonderful guest, focus on how you can support their listeners and what value you will bring. This is why, inside of The Social Media Detox Club, you get access to the podcast pitch template, which shows you how to write a podcast pitch that doesn’t get ignored.

Not Following Up

After submitting your podcast pitch, you don’t want to just wait, hoping that the podcast host sees your pitch. You want to be proactive and make sure you follow up. When you submit your pitch, set a reminder to follow up in a week. When you join The Social Media Club, you get access to the collab tracker. This tool helps you keep track of where you’re at in the podcast pitch process.

Avoid these mistakes, and you will start successfully pitching yourself to guest on podcasts.
