Raise your hand if you are a recovering people pleaser. Me too, mama, me too. For many of us, we were raised to be people pleasers. People pleasing is so ingrained in us that we may not even realize it has spilled over into other areas of our lives. If people pleasing goes unchecked, we can quickly hit burnout and start to experience resentment in our businesses. What Does People Pleasing Look Like as a Business Owner?
People pleasing in your business can show up in various forms. Here are some examples:
- Scope creep, which is allowing clients to make requests that aren’t outlined in your contract and you executing those requests without compensation or even when you don’t actually want to.
- Completing client work before receiving full or partial pay for your services.
- Having a client fail to adhere to your contract and you not enforcing the consequences outlined in the contract.
- Clients having constant access to you, even if it’s outside of your business hours.
- You rushing to complete a project on time even though the client didn’t submit the assets you needed to complete the project.
And the list can go on and on.
Overcome People Pleasing in Your Business by Setting Boundaries with Your Clients
The key to stopping being a people pleaser in your business is to set boundaries with your clients. Setting boundaries with clients when you are a recovering people pleaser can be overwhelming and cause anxiety. You don’t want to cause any conflict, but the reality is that you are not responsible for how someone feels when you enforce boundaries. At the end of the day, you are the CEO of your business, which means you get to set expectations AND expect people to adhere to those expectations.
Setting boundaries with clients doesn’t mean you should be rude or disrespectful. You can communicate your boundaries in a professional way. Set your boundaries and make sure to communicate and enforce them with your clients.
