Lessons Learned from My First Time Speaking at a Conference as a Business Owner

Speaking at a conference is a great way to increase your visibility as a business owner. It also gives you the opportunity to network and connect with other business owners. When you have an online business, it can get lonely. Nothing compares to in person networking and relationship building. Meeting your “online” friends in person is priceless and fills your cup as a business owner. Engaging with other powerful business owners in person will light a fire in you and will inspire you.

Mindset Blocks that Come with Public Speaking and In Person Networking

Imposter Syndrome

Whether this is your first time or 100th time speaking at a conference or attending an in person event, imposter syndrome will rear its ugly head. You may start to question whether or not you deserve to be part of the event or feel like you don’t have much to contribute to the conversation. Those thoughts are false narratives your mind is trying to convince you of to keep you in your comfort zone. You deserve to be in the room, and you have so much value to offer. Show up and be your authentic self. Share your expertise with the world.

Networking as an Introvert

If you are an introvert like me, the thought of networking in a room full of other business owners can sound exhausting. You may even try to convince yourself that you don’t need to participate in conferences and other networking events. That is not true, and there is a way to participate without completely draining your social battery. Two strategies that help me are incorporating mini-breaks throughout to give myself a recharge and going to the event with someone who is full of energy that I can feed off of. Attending an in person conference doesn’t have to result in completely zapping your social battery. Yes, you will most likely still need about a week to recover, but it will be so worth it.

How to Find Opportunities for Speaking at Conferences

  1. Ask your network: The people currently in your network most likely know of opportunities for you or can connect you to those who do. Reach out to your network and let them know you want to start speaking at conferences and see if they know of any opportunities.
  2. Prioritize relationship building: Far too often, business owners see each new connection as a potential client. Instead of seeing new connections that way, focus on getting to know them and building genuine relationships. Those relationships can result in future collaborations or recommendations for collaborations.
  3. Don’t be afraid to pitch yourself for opportunities: If you see a conference you will be a good fit for, pitch yourself even if you don’t meet the requirements. When you pitch topics that are valuable and add to the overall conference, you may be surprised to see that you are selected as a speaker even if you don’t meet the full requirements.
