Listen to today’s episode on Should Business Owners Use Substack for Podcast Hosting? Here’s Why I Don’t Recommend It:

Substack has become a popular platform for business owners to build and engage with their community, thanks to its many features for sharing written, video, and audio content. While Substack may be popular, is it the best option for podcast hosting when you are leveraging podcasting to grow your online business? That’s the question I’m answering in today’s episode. If you’ve been considering starting a podcast for your business or are currently hosting one on Substack, you don’t want to miss this episode.

Main Topics Covered in this Episode:

  • Is Substack the best option for podcast hosting when you are starting a podcast for your business?
  • Substack podcast hosting features
  • What you need in a podcast hosting platform when podcasting for your business

FAQs About Substack Podcast Hosting

Can Substack Host Podcasts?

Substack can host podcasts. They offer some of the features found on other podcast hosting platforms, such as download counts and distribution to podcast listening platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

What Features Does Substack Podcast Hosting Have?

Substack podcast hosting has several features, including:

  • Podcast categorization
  • Having your podcast listed on your Substack website page and episodes on your homepage
  • Podcast metrics: downloads, top countries, and top podcast players
  • Distribution to Spotify, Apple, YouTube Music, YouTube Podcasts, Pocketcasts, and Overcasts
  • Recording your episodes on Substack
  • Migration to other hosting platforms if you decide to switch after starting your podcast
  • Easily share your newest episodes with Substack subscribers

Do Podcasts Do Well on Substack?

Substack offers some features that other hosting platforms provide; however, many of these features are limited, making it difficult for podcasts to perform well. This is especially true for business owners using a podcast to grow their business. For instance, the only podcast metrics Substack tracks are downloads, top countries, and top podcast players. As a podcasting business owner, you need more robust metrics, such as the number of unique listeners, and creating unique links to track leads and conversions.

Should Business Owners Use Substack for Podcast Hosting?

Business owners should not use Substack for podcast hosting. While Substack is a popular platform, it does not offer the features you need when you are leveraging a podcast for marketing and sales. Substack podcast hosting offers limited analytics, which makes it hard to track leads and conversions. The platform is not ideal for podcast discovery through organic search. The platform prioritizes text-based content over audio, so audio content isn’t pushed out as often as text-based content. Most Substack users search the platform for written content, not so much audio content. Also, a big part of growing your audience on Substack is through recommendations and Substack notes, which means creating even more marketing content just to grow your podcast listenership.
