Listen to today’s episode on Re-Record or Optimize? Here’s What to Do With Outdated Podcast Episodes:
You’ve hit publish on over 100 episodes, and within that time, you’ve most likely made some pivots in your podcast and business. Your messaging has changed, you have a new ideal listener, or your offers have changed. Now, you may be wondering what to do with your outdated episodes. If your older podcast episodes point to offers that no longer exist or speak to listeners who are no longer your target audience, do you scrap the episodes, re-record and update them, or leave them alone? That’s exactly what I’m talking about in today’s episode! One of my clients recently asked this question as she’s published over 300 episodes, but wasn’t sure what to do about the older ones that point new listeners to old offers. I answer this question and break down 3 options you have for repurposing your old podcast episodes.

Outdated Podcast Episodes FAQs
What to Do with Outdated Podcast Episodes?
Outdated podcast episodes can be a pain because if they link to offers and resources that are no longer available, new listeners may lose interest. You don’t have to scrap your old podcast episodes; however, if it makes sense, you should point them to your newer content. Instead of going through your podcast archive and updating your links, point listeners to a newer, related episode that includes your most relevant links. This creates a better experience for new listeners and keeps them on your content longer. If your older episodes are still relevant to your current podcast audience and it makes sense to just update the links (meaning the episode content connects directly to the new links), then you can take the time to update them.
How to Repurpose Old Podcast Content?
When most people think about repurposing podcast episodes, they often turn them into blog posts, YouTube videos, social media content, and emails. But there’s another way you can repurpose your old podcast episodes: updating or refreshing them. As you hit publish on more podcast episodes, you will grow both as a business owner and podcast host. Your messaging will shift and get even clearer; you may have a new target audience, or your offers may change. Whatever the case may be, you aren’t the same person you were when you published those older podcast episodes. Instead of forgetting about your older episodes, go back through your podcast archive and see if you can update any of those episodes. Do you have a fresh take on the topic? Do you approach the topic differently now that you are speaking to a new ideal listener? Has your stance on the topic changed? Doing updates or fresh takes on previous topics is a great way to repurpose old podcast episodes. It allows you to still speak on a relevant topic, but now you can make it relevant to your current audience and align with your current messaging.
How to Organize Your Podcast Archive?
One thing every business owner with a podcast needs to do is keep track of the episodes they publish. This helps you keep track of the topics you’ve already covered, episode titles, and keywords already used. The best way to organize your podcast archive is by using a project management tool. I use Trello for my podcast and plan my episodes in Trello. This allows me to keep track of every episode published and makes it easy to go back and search through my podcast archive. If you haven’t started a system like this already, you definitely need to, especially before you hit the triple digits with your podcast.
